|Avalanche Level 1 Course “Avalanche Foundations” Module|

The Western Massachusetts Region will host an Avalanche Level 1 Course “Avalanche Foundations” Module on October 25 (Saturday) at Northfield Mountain.
Significant pre-course study is required, but otherwise the course has no prerequisites. Students planning to proceed though to the next module (up north, during the winter) must have back- country ski gear. All details are available at: http://avycourse.blogspot.com

The New England Orienteering Club will hold an event at Northfield Mountain on Saturday, May 31. Races begin at 9:30 in the morning and continue through the day. For more information and registration, visit the event website.
|AMN Returns to Northfield Mountain in September

Eastern Division Avalanche, Mountain Travel & Rescue, and Nordic instructors will convene at Northfield Mountain for a weekend of seminars and skills refreshers, the fifth time in eight years. The hardy participants will camp at Barton Cove Friday and Saturday nights. Join them if you dare! The dates are Saturday and Sunday, September 20 and 21.
The 2011 event was featured in the Winter 2012 issue of Ski Patrol magazine.

From the Daily Trail Report, Thursday, March 13, 2014:
“Our ski and snowshoe season has ended abruptly after Wednesday's rainstorm. The trails are mostly ice with some bare spots and no snow in the forecast.
Thanks for visiting this winter!
The trails will be closed to all uses while the ice melts and the mud dries.”

|Brett Battles the Birkie!|

On Saturday, Brett Marquard competed in the Birkebeiner Skate Race in Cable, Wisconsin, his twelfth time in the grueling 50 km (31 mi.) event. He finished the course in a time of 3:28:56.6, a pace of 6 min 43.5 seconds per mile or 8.92 miles per hour. Brett placed number 483 of 3955 entrants, faster than 87% of his competitors. Congratulations, Brett!

Western Massachusetts Region Director Joel Sevick today presented a National Certificate of Appreciation to our patrol. The citation reads,
“The National Ski Patrol System

kind donations of medical training equipment to the
patrollers of the Western Massachusetts Region.”

|Patrol Recognizes Bob Perry|

Forty years ago, Bob Perry was one of the first members of our patrol. In 2003 he was awarded National Appointment 9702 in recognition of his service. He stepped down
from patrolling a few years ago and recently retired from Northfield Mountain staff. The The patrol’s Old Guard honored him at a reception last night. Bill Gabriel presented Bob with a certificate and plaque in recognition of his multi-decade service. In attendance were Tom Deam, Charlene Deam, Bob Duris, Joannie Duris, Bill Gabriel, Anne Perry, Bob Presutti, Chris Williams, and Bill Schweikert. Chris Frado and Denny Wilkins sent warm greetings. Western Massachusetts Region Nordic Advisor Bob Presutti organized the event.

The Northfield Mountain Nordic Ski Patrol website (www.nmnsp.org) first went online in November, 2003, ten years ago. Since then, we’ve announced upcoming patrol activities and reported related events outside the patrol.
If you’re nostalgic, take a look at the first month of postings in fall 2003. You’ll find that the format is a bit different, but the page is still familiar.

At today’s Nordic Skills Refresher, Patrol Representative Bill Gabriel presented the Eastern Division Patroller Appreciation Award to Joannie Duris in recognition of her long service to the patrol. The EDPAA is intended to recognize long-tenured members who frequently go above and beyond expectations in their patrol but who have not had the desire or opportunity to assume leadership roles at the patrol or region level. Joannie received a certificate, an embroidered patch, and a pin. Congratulations, Joannie, and thanks for your service.
