The Northfield Mountain Nordic Ski Patrol (Northfield, Massachusetts) is an
organization of volunteer first responders trained and nationally
certified in winter safety, outdoor emergency care, cross country skiing,
land navigation, mountain travel, search and rescue, and winter survival.
February Patrol Meeting Scheduled
February 5, 2012

The patrol holds its next monthly meeting on Sunday, February 12, at 5:30 PM at Northfield Mountain's Visitor Center. Business will include nomination of candidates for the annual election of officers at the March meeting.

Volunteer for 2012 Bay State Winter Games
January 8, 2012

The Bay State Games provide quality, Olympic- style competitions and developmental programs for amateur athletes of all ages and abilities.
Alpine skiing will take place on Saturday, February 11 at Bousquet Mountain in Pittsfield. The competition will consist of a two-run giant slalom race and include divisions for middle school, high school, open, and masters categories. Athletes from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont and New Hampshire are eligible to participate.
Volunteers are needed to serve as officials, score keepers, gatekeepers, timers, ticket takers, show ushers, and support staff who help with with registration, results reporting, merchandise sales, and traffic managers. Read more about volunteer positions. All volunteers will receive a catered buffet lunch, Bay State Games t-shirts and jackets, and other benefits.

The patrol refreshed itself nordic-wise on Saturday, December 3. Skills reviewed included patrol procedures, fire-building, knots, and map & compass. Bob Presutti served up most excellent free-range beef burgers.

Mountain Travel & Rescue 2 Course Coming to Northfield
December 5, 2011

Eric Zaharee will hold the first session of a Mountain Travel and Rescue 2 course at Northfield Mountain on the weekend of January 28 29, 2012.
This 2-session course course provides field experiences in navigation, travel, survival skills, basic search and rescue exercises, and an overnight campout.
NSP Programs site gives the syllabus and prerequisites.
The second, field session will be held on Mount Moosilauke from February 24 to 26.

Bob Presutti Appointed as Regional Nordic Advisor

Joel Sevick, Western Massachusetts Region Director, today announced the appointment of Bob Presutti as Regional Nordic Advisor. Bob is a Senior Nordic Patroller and a Nordic Instructor Trainer. He holds National Ski Patrol Appointment #9700. Congratulations, Bob!

2012 Winter Sciences and Survival Seminar at West Point

The National Ski Patrol’s Eastern, Southern, and European Divisions will host the Winter Sciences and Survival Seminar for Avalanche, Mountain Travel & Rescue, and Nordic instructors on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at the U.S. Army’s West Point Ski Lodge. For several years, this biennial event has been held at the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL ) in Hanover, NH. MORE »

2011 Nordic Refresher Information

The 2011 nordic skills refresher will be held Saturday, December 3rd, at Northfield Mountain. The day begins at 7:30 AM with registration. The American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer recertification starts at 8:00. Nordic skills review follows at 10:00. Activities should wrap up around 4:00.
The format of the Nordic Refresher has become more structured. Like the OEC Refresher, pre-course reading is recommended, and the content is clearly given. Advance preparation will foster confidence. MORE »
